      How to make it stick

      1. Write it together, not at them. A contract handed down is a rule with extra steps. Let your kid argue for a number — you'll usually land close to where you were going anyway, and they'll defend a deal they helped make.
      2. Sign the grown-ups' half honestly. If you're on your phone at dinner, the whole document is theatre and your kid knows it by Tuesday.
      3. Put it somewhere physical. The fridge, the back of a bedroom door. A file on a laptop has never stopped a single argument.
      4. Re-read it on the date you set. What fits a seven-year-old insults an eleven-year-old. Changing a rule on purpose is different from letting it rot.
